On-going Design for the Future Reconstruction of Boylston Street
Historic Downtown Boston, MA

Boylston Street improvements consist of a unified inter modal accessibility roadway design and reconstruction approach with major streetscape improvements for this historic Back-Bay urban arterial roadway.  Bayside’s design includes implementation of coordinated continuity landscaping strips at sidewalk edges to integrate the streetscape of one of Boston's most prestigious historic streets for ten city blocks from Charlesgate East to Arlington Street.

The nine Boylston Street intersections to be reconstructed and upgraded in this project include: Hemenway Street/Ipswich Street, Dalton Street/Hereford Street, Gloucester Street, Fairfield Street, Exeter Street, Dartmouth Street, Clarendon Street, Berkeley Street and Arlington Street.  The project includes the following elements:

  • Integration of the existing sidewalk and roadway geometry.
  • Traffic signal design and coordination.
  • Special granite sidewalk pavement and landscaping designed to reinforce the richly textured pedestrian promenade.
  • Crosswalks designed of concrete pavers, bordered with granite curb bands.
  • Redesign of existing on street parking.
  • Design for wheelchair accessibility meeting latest ADA / AAB requirements.
  • Curbside row of trees along the entire project.
  • Uniform historic style lighting, which will integrate with the historic Back-Bay theme and spaced according to the light spacing standards established by the City of Boston Master Development Plan.
  • Utility improvements.
Bayside Engineering investigated and prepared a functional design report (FDR) to evaluate traffic operations in order to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety and efficiency along the entire arterial. FDR work and analyses included: collection of traffic volumes, including peak hour turning movements, truck volumes and pedestrian counts; capacity analyses of existing and projected future peak hour traffic volumes; and traffic accident history.
