Bridge and Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering is the science and art of planning, design, construction, operation, monitoring and inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation and preservation, demolition and dismantling of structures (structure: includes bridges, buildings, and all types of civil engineering structures, composed of any structural material), taking into consideration technical, economic, environmental, aesthetic and social aspects. The Bayside team has been providing these services successfully, efficiently and economically for the past 30 years.

Bridge Engineering
Bayside Engineering, Inc. has been providing professional services for the design of bridges for over 30 years.  Our design team has successfully completed over two hundred bridge design projects for the Massachusetts Highway Department, numerous local municipalities and several public and private rail and transit companies.

Bayside is Prequalified by the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) for bridge engineering services including Basic Bridge Design, Intermediate Bridge Design, Complex Bridge Design and Bridge Inspection. Bayside is also prequalified by MHD for Basic Roadway Design, Intermediate Roadway Design and Traffic Operations allowing Bayside to complete all aspects of any bridge project. Bayside has been performing these services successfully for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and many other municipalities, State and Federal agencies on a continuing basis for the past thirty years.

Recent failures of major structures has prompted growing public concern about bridge safety, and Bayside is being called upon to play an increasingly active role in the rehabilitation of the Commonwealth's bridge and culvert structures.  The Federal government estimates that more than half of the nation's 264,000 state and interstate bridges and its 302,000 city, town and county bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.  As Massachusetts seeks to rectify this critical situation, Bayside, with its broad experience in bridge design and rehabilitation, will certainly be an asset.

Local Massachusetts's cities and towns are also being called upon to maintain and safeguard the many bridge and culvert structures located within their communities.  State and Federal governments have transferred responsibilities to the municipality to contract for professional bridge design engineering services.  Bayside has been providing these services successfully, efficiently and economically to numerous municipalities throughout Massachusetts.  Our professional qualifications and experience demonstrate a long history of successful bridge projects in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Bayside has designed bridges for the Massachusetts Highway Department, City of Boston, MBTA, many other States, Municipalities, Federal Agencies and Private Clients.  Types of bridge structures Bayside has designed include single and multi-span truss, single and multi-span pre-stress concrete superstructure, steel plate girders, steel plate curve girders, steel stringer bridge and historic rehabilitations to name a few.

Through many years of experience Bayside has provided cities and towns with a service that has enabled us to construct a project approach that is both efficient and productive when dealing with bridge projects and related roadway services.  The following recent project examples demonstrate some of our bridge engineering expertise.

Route 202 over Connecticut River,
Holyoke-South Hadley

Summer Street Over Reserved Channel,
South Boston

Mineral Street over MBTA, Reading

I-91 Viaduct, Springfield

Overview of Bridge Design Projects

Bridge Inspections and Ratings
Since 1975, Bayside has been inspecting and rating bridges of all types as part of the Massachusetts Bridge Rating Program for the Massachusetts Highway Department. To date, we have evaluated and reported on over 3,000 structures, a large majority of the Commonwealth's bridges. Many reports with repair recommendations have resulted in subsequent design contracts including rehabilitation and complete replacement. Increases in vehicle traffic and recent failures of major structures has prompted growing public concern about bridge safety, and Bayside is being called upon to play an increasingly active role in the rehabilitation and replacement of the Commonwealth's bridge and culvert structures. Bayside also specializes in seismic evaluations and retrofits.

Bridge Super Overload Analysis
Bayside has been performing bridge super overload analyses for Massachusetts and New England bridge structures for over 25 years.  Bayside specializes in analyzing and determining acceptable truck super overload routes for destinations throughout New England.  Bayside always utilizes the latest engineering software and procedures in performing these services.

Bayside has completed, on average, over sixty super overload route and rating reports and permitting documents per year for private trucking clients to obtain the necessary permits from the MHD Bridge Section to move the load.  In addition, Bayside has been under contract with the MHD to catalogue and rate all the bridges of the major state and interstate routes and develop a comprehensive engineering database file on each individual bridge structure that can easily be re-used for different super overloading weights and truck configurations.  Bayside has rated thousands of bridge structures and are familiar with a large majority of the bridges in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Because of our expertise and continuous work levels in this field, Bayside has been working closely with several software developers to improve their product.  Bayside also provides training and assistance to the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) Bridge Engineering Section on the development, implementation and use of new bridge engineering software..

Pedestrian Walkways
Bayside has designed pedestrian bridges and overpasses for the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD), the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife and local municipalities throughout New England.
