The following is a partial list of representative Bridge Rehabilitation or Replacement design projects completed by Bayside over the past 10 years.

F-04-12 Route 202 over North Nashua River, Fitchburg, MA
This three span structure consisted of rehabilitation of the superstructure and replacement of the south span with prestress concrete boxes.  Rehabilitation of the existing northerly span trusses was done and the structure retrofitted for seismic forces.  The independent spans were made seismically integral with the horizontal links.  Date Completed: 1998.

S-10-20, Route 7A over Konkapot River, Sheffield, MA
This bridge, currently under design, will replace a structurally deficient structure. The new structure will consist of a 142’0” single span longitudinal, curved girder superstructure.  This superstructure will minimize construction time and any environmental impacts.  This section of Konkapot River is mapped endangered species habitat and is known to have high levels of mercury contamination.  The substructure will consist of concrete stub abutments founded upon ledge.  Est. Construction:  2001 - 2002.

D-12-7=W-12-5, Oxford Avenue over French River, Dudley/Webster, MA
A new superstructure was designed to increase both pedestrian and vehicular safety. Two 14"0" travel lanes and two 5"9" sidewalls will be constructed over longitudinal steel stringers. These stringers are supported on in integral abutments. This superstructure directly ties into future maintenance and deterioration is minimized due to two types of conditions. The integral abutments are supported by driven steel H piles.  Date completed: 1998.

One Mile Long Viaduct Section of Route I-91, Downtown Springfield, MA
The rehabilitation involved six bridge structures, S-24-61-1, S-24-61-2, S-24-61A, S-24-61B, S-24-83 and S-24-84. The rehabilitation was comprised of five major components: bridge coping, expansion joints, and bridge drainage, substructure repairs and electrical system.  The bridge coping was replaced to upgrade the traffic safety of the bridge and involved partial deck replacement.  The expansion joint repairs involved replacing the existing joints with new strip seal expansion joints and ride over joints.

The bridge drainage rehabilitation included complete replacement of clearances and tie in to the existing street drainage system below the viaduct.  Replacement of the electrical system was incorporated into the project due to the poor existing condition of the system and involved replacing conduit, wire junction boxes and the resetting of each light standard with new wiring, luminaries and bulbs.  Completion Date: 1997 (A Partnering Project)

Route 66 (Northampton to Easthampton), Northampton, MA
The three bridge rehabilitation and widenings included in this project consisted of a one span integrate abutment (N-19-38) supporting a prestress plank bridge. The second bridge consisted of single span concrete box (N-19-41) supported directly on stub abutments keyed into rock.  The third structure (N-19-21) consisted of a two span concrete arch, which was rehabilitated for seismic loads. The arches were modeled in STAAD and resultant seismic forces analyzed in a two-dimensional system.  Date Completed: Design Completed 1999, not yet Constructed.

Route 202 over Connecticut River (Sergeant Mueller Bridge)
Holyoke / South Hadley, MA
The 1700-foot, 7 span structure, consisted of the investigation of a rehabilitation vs. reconstruction.  The entire deck was replaced and state-of the-art seismic isolators bearing were added in the rehabilitation design to reduce earthquake forces on the structure.  Bayside also provided the design for a new pedestrian path way along the bridge which was non existent on the standing structure.  Date Completed: 1998

T-07-005 Old Turnpike Road over Squannacook River, Townsend, MA
This project consisted of replacing a two span timber deck structure spanning the Squannacook River.  The existing structure was scour critical with underlying of the southeast corner of the easterly abutment.  The proposed structure consisted of a single span (pre-stressed box beams) structure built on abutments supported by steel piles which eliminated scour critical element of the bridge.  Date Completed: Fall 2000

Summer Street over Reserved Channel, Boston, MA
This new bridge replacement structure design for the City of Boston consists of an eighteen span continuous prestress deck structures supported by concrete pier bents on driven and drilled concrete caissons. The span length is 1,100 feet with over 121 caissons required.  Bayside also incorporated a fishing pier into the design.  Permitting included; water quality certification for disturbance and removal of contaminated sediments; U.S. Coast Guard Bridge Permit; Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Consistency Certification; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and Section 106, Section 4(f) and HAER documentation for demolition of the existing National Historic Register eligible bridge.  Est. Date Completed: 2001

Hatches Harbor Dike, Provincetown, MA
Hatches Harbor Dike is located near the airport in Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA. The existing structure was an earthen dike lined with amour stone on both sides. The existing single 24-inch pipe allows tide water to pass through. The new structure is constructed of pre-casted concrete box culverts with four 4’x7’ openings and concrete wing walls. The size of each opening can be adjusted by opening or closing the vertical gates. The purpose of the adjustable gates is to allow a desirable amount of tide water to feed the salt march and also to protect the airport during heavy storms.  Date Completed: 1998

Cooks Dam Bridges (Main Street) over Mill River, Northampton, MA
This project involved rehabilitation to two bridge structures for the City of Northampton: a 66' concrete arch structure and a 29' span steel stringer bridge.  The steel stringer bridge was upgraded to HS-20 loading and thus eliminated the need to post the bridge for reduced loadings.  Areas of spalled and deteriorated concrete to the concrete arch structure and the substructure elements were repaved.  Provisions were included for support of a new 8" water main across the structures new metal bridge railings (Type G-3) were installed across the bridges and on the approaches.  The bridges are located within a historic mill site; therefore, particular attention was given to the aesthetic impact of the bridge reconstruction on the surrounding area.  Date Completed: 1996

Route 202 (Winchester Road) over B&M Railroad, Templeton, MA
This project involved complete replacement of a deficient bridge structure with a new 3 span continuous steel stringer bridge.  The depth of the proposed superstructure was minimized and the roadway profile raised to provide an increase of 3 additional feet of clearance over the railroad tracks (21'-0") to allow passage of "double stack" railroad cars.  The proposed superstructure consists of an 81'-6" main span with 52'-3" end spans.  The bridge is constructed of unpainted, high strength, weathering steel.  The bridge provides a 40'-0" wide roadway with one 7'-0" wide sidewalk.   Concrete barrier rails and safety screening, which meet the federal standards for crash testing were provided on both sides.

New drilled caisson piers were constructed adjacent to the existing piers in order to avoid impacts to train traffic and minimize need for sheeting.  The existing pier footings were retained for use in supporting crash walls in front of the proposed piers.  The caissons also provided necessary flexibility to carry the required seismic forces with both piers being "fixed" to the superstructure.  The abutment foundations are stub abutments supported on steel piles driven directly behind the existing concrete abutments.  The bridge was designed to be built in two stages with two lanes of traffic to be maintained throughout the construction period.  Temporary traffic signals were provided during stage I to provide an one-way reversible traffic flow across the structure.  Date Completed: 1997

Walworth Street over MBTA & Bay Colony Railroads, Boston, MA
This project involved replacement of deficient steel stringer and timber deck superstructure with prestressed concrete deck beams.  The existing concrete abutments were repaired and retained the proposed construction.  Pedestrian traffic was maintained throughout the construction period.  Date Completed: 1997

Danvers Road over MBTA and B&M Railroads, Swampscott, MA
Complete replacement of an existing bridge on an improved roadway alignment.  The new super- structure consists of prestressed concrete butted deck beams supported on reinforced concrete abutments.  The new bridge has a 40' roadway width plus one sidewalk.  Date Completed: 1996

Center Bridge Road over Nashua River, Lancaster, MA
The existing bridge consists of a two span continuous steel stringer bridge.  The project, completed for the Town of Lancaster, involved complete replacement of the concrete deck, widening of the roadway from 24 feet to 30 feet, and seismic retrofitting to meet the present AASHTO seismic design requirements.  In addition, the load capacity of the structure is being increased to HS-20 loading, which will eliminate the current need to post the bridge.  The roadway deck joints were eliminated on the rehabilitated structure to minimize future maintenance requirements.  The bridge railing was upgraded to metal railing, Type S3-PL2, which meets current AASHTO crash test criteria.  Date Completed: 1995

South Union Street over B&M Railroad and MBTA Tracks (L-4-22), Lawrence, MA
This project involved the complete replacement of the existing superstructure and substructure at the same location.  The new structure consists of a single 105 foot long span utilizing 50" deep welded steel plate girders and supported by new concrete counterfort abutments.  Bayside's work included a structural survey and inspection of the existing structure, type study report, sketch plans submission, soils and foundation report, and preparation of final plans, specifications and cost estimates.  Date Completed: 1996

Cummins Highway over Penn Central Railroad, Boston, MA
This project involved complete replacement of the existing superstructure with new prestressed concrete butted box beams.  The existing granite masonry abutments were modified and retained in the new construction.  Date Completed: 1994

S. Union Street over B&M Railroad and MBTA (L-4-23),  Lawrence, MA
This project involves the complete replacement of the existing structural deficient superstructure of this two span structure.  The existing granite masonry abutment and piers were retained in the proposed reconstruction and were modified in order to meet present AASHTO design criteria.  The new superstructure consists of two span continuous rolled stringers with a concrete deck.  Bayside's scope of work on this project was identical to Bridge L-4-22 and included all work from initial structural survey to the preparation of final plans, specifications and cost estimates.  Date Completed: May 1995

Water Street over Blackstone River, Millbury, MA
This project involved the rehabilitation of a two span steel stringer bridge for the Town of Millbury.  The bridge carries Water Street over the Blackstone River and provides the only access to the Town's cemetery.  This project was initiated due to an undermining problem, which had developed at the downstream end of the bridge pier.  Our design included tremie concrete fill to alleviate the undermining, as well as the complete replacement of the concrete deck and repainting of the steel stringers.  The project is presently on hold and is waiting funding for construction.

Reconstruction of Route 2, Harvard to Acton, MA
This project involves 9.5 miles of highway improvements and the rehabilitation of eleven (11) bridges.  The bridge rehabilitations involve full and partial deck replacements, repairs to stringers damaged by collisions; replacement of sidewalks, railings and deck joints; replacement of overextended rocker bearings, concrete repairs and numerous other incidental repairs.  Bayside's work involved the preparation of an in-depth structural survey of all the bridges, preparation of preliminary design report outlining the proposed repairs.  Extensive maintenance of traffic plans were developed to maintain traffic at all times during construction.  The following bridges were involved in this project.
