Newburyport Park & Ride Expansion and Signalization Upgrades
along Storey Avenue (Route 113), Newburyport, MA

Originally designed by Bayside in 1985 as a brand new park and ride lot at the Route I-95 and Route 113 interchange. Parking capacity was established for approximately 210 vehicles. The parking lot design included a cul-de-sac for bus turn-around. A bus shelter was also provided within the facility. Engineering design issues for the lot included: geometric layout within the existing Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) interchange right-of-way; grading and drainage design, parking lot lighting, signing and pavement marking plans.  The lot was expanded in 1995 to more than double its capacity (434 spaces).  The expansion design revised and upgraded the geometric, drainage and lighting systems. The parking lot expansion also included reconstruction of the cul-de-sac for bus turn around, a new passenger pick-up area, ticketing building, shelters and new signalization for the entrance intersection with Route 113.

As a result of the increase in traffic to be generated by the expanded lot, MHD also retained Bayside to study and improve traffic signal systems along a one mile segment of Route 113 (Storey Avenue) in the vicinity of the park and ride lot entrance. Seven signalized intersections were evaluated and redesigned. Signalization improvements included: new traffic signal equipment, revised traffic signal phasing and timing and capability of a closed loop system operation with a remote computer controller by telephone lines.
