The project involves two miles of Route 1A through a heavily urbanized
area of Beverly, MA with over 30 abutting historic properties.
The roadway will be reconstructed to have a wider 12 foot travel lane
in each direction. In addition to widening the streets, the
shoulders will be widened and additional turning lanes will be provided.
Engineering design elements include:
- Upgrades of intersection geometry and signalization.
- Turn Outs for Buses.
- Sidewalks on both sides with handicap accessibility at crossing
points.
- Design of curbing, lighting relocations, and landscaping.

- Obtain necessary surveys and prepared comprehensive construction
documents.
- Prepare necessary documents and obtain environmental permits.
- Public hearings planned through Bayside Engineering.
- Rehabilitation of the existing sewer and water system under a separate
participating contract with the City of Beverly.
- Historic evaluation and documentation of existing structures along
this section of Route 1A including design minimization and mitigation
of all potential historic property impacts.
- Hazardous materials assessment and abatement.
- Construction assistance to the MHD for roadway and traffic construction
and to the City of Beverly for the Water and Sewer improvements.
This project is scheduled to be under construction during the 2000 and 2001
Spring, Summer and Fall construction seasons.
