Transportation Engineering

Transportation Engineering Division

Since 1967, Bayside has been engaged in transportation engineering including Roadway Designs, Traffic Designs, Bridge Designs, Parking Facility Designs, utility relocations, environmental engineering and permitting.  Bayside Engineering, Inc. (Bayside) is prequalified by the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) for roadway and bridge engineering services including Basic Bridge Design, Intermediate Bridge Design, Complex Bridge Design, Bridge Inspection, Basic Roadway Design, Intermediate Roadway Design and Traffic Operations.  Our experience and capabilities permit Bayside to complete all aspects of almost any roadway/highway or bridge project.  BEI has been successfully performing these services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and many other municipalities, State and Federal agencies on a continuing basis for the past thirty years.
Roadway Designs and Transportation Engineering
One of the most important components of our State's infrastructure, its highway system, is in a constant state of change, rehabilitation and redesign. For over 30 years, Bayside has provided planning, design and construction inspection services to Federal, State, county and local municipal agencies responsible for building and maintaining our interstates, highways, local streets, roads, bridges, traffic controls and infrastructure.

Traffic Engineering
As road and highway systems become more congested and municipalities continue to evaluate their traffic flow problems, the role of the traffic engineer takes on increasing significance. Since its founding, Bayside has been continuously involved in traffic engineering, providing a variety of services in such areas as traffic impact studies, design and planning of traffic signals, controls and highway-rail crossings. Our engineers are systems oriented and employ a multi-discipline approach to our client's problems. Technical aspects are studied and careful consideration given to both traffic needs, municipal requirements, abutter concerns and environmental issues. Most projects are subject to public and/or environmental scrutiny at their onset so that affected parties may express their views that may impact the development of the project.

Bayside is particularly attuned to the safety aspects of traffic problem solving. Bayside was selected to redesign more than 100 hazardous intersections for the Massachusetts Highway Department. Our design work on these intersections included: interconnected closed-loop signal systems, special pre-empted systems at fire stations, railroad crossing systems with automatic gates and train coordination controls. Bayside’s responsibilities have also included preparation of traffic controls during construction operations which include temporary signals, lighting, detouring and special signing.

Among the hundreds of traffic flow and control problems Bayside has solved, there is quite likely to be one such as you may be facing. Our traffic engineers are available during all phases of development to apply their expertise and experience to your traffic problems. Bayside is also available to help with any unforeseen traffic problems that may arise while under construction.

Park & Ride and Other Parking Facilities
Bayside is responsible for the design of park and ride facilities for automobile commuters, MBTA rail and bus services throughout New England including those for the Cities and Towns of Newburyport, Amesbury, Andover, Plymouth and Georgetown. Designs included parking layout, landscaping, lighting, closed drainage systems, roadway access, bus drop off/pick up areas and traffic controls, signalization.  Other types of parking facilities designed by Bayside include: motorist rest areas, private parking lots and elevated parking structures, parking for municipal buildings, maintenance facilities, garages, vehicle Storage lots and commercial parking.
Rest Area, Welcome Center and Information Building Designs
Complete site, building, civil, drainage, lighting and highway design for motorist rest areas in Salisbury, Chelmsford, Templeton and several other smaller locations along I-495.  Pictured to the right is the I-495 Northbound Rest Area and Information Center constructed in Chelmsford, MA in 1999.
Drainage Design and Paving Layouts
Bayside Engineering has designed all types of drainage projects ranging from pumping stations and water treatment plants to stormwater drainage for roadways, parking lots all types of municipal, commercial and private roads and overall sites. Our designs for open channel and closed storm drainage systems have included numerous types of flood control, retention and water quality treatment structures.
