PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Bayside Engineering provided comprehensive design services for the Town of Boxford for the replacement of the Main Street stone masonry culvert over Porter Brook using accelerated construction. The existing 3.5’ x 4’ culvert was replaced with an embedded 6’ high x 8’ wide box culvert (4’ high x 8’ wide installed open area). The design required development of a calibrated 700+ acre watershed model and scour analysis to assist in the selection of the appropriate culvert. The culvert selected exceeded all aspects the Army Corps of Engineers stream crossing and continuity requirements. As a result, the permitting process was fast and efficient.
Because Main Street is one of the most traveled roadways in the town, an accelerated construction schedule was necessary to complete the work with minimal impact on residents and commuter travel patterns. Accelerated construction methods also greatly minimized the disturbance to environmental resource areas and National Heritage Endangered Species Program designated habitats. Using the guidelines set forth in the detour plan developed by Bayside Engineering, the entire culvert replacement from excavation to final paving was completed in 65 hours and under budget.
The project continues to be favorably referred to by the Town administration and is an excellent example of Bayside Engineering’s experience with providing proper project execution and management from concept to completion.
