PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Bayside Engineering, Inc. was called upon by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to complete the design of urgent repairs needed for this 500 foot historic truss bridge over the Westfield River in Huntington, MA. Bayside completed the inspection and design for the bridge reconstruction in less than 90 days.

Work consisted of complete superstructure rehabilitation including: new deck, sidewalks and railings; replacement of deficient stringers; abutment repairs; seismic upgrades; temporary piers/supports; truss and web repairs; lead paint removal and containment; repainting; replace bearing plates and beam seats; and cosmetic replacement/reconstruction of historic ornamentation.

The most difficult part of the design was keeping the bridge open during construction. This was accomplished by a staged construction design, which included temporary pier supports and temporary traffic signals for single lane alternating traffic flow.
